What to say when your child won't do homework
Homework has become a nightly battle and your child is resisting starting.
Try saying
βLet's just do the first line together.β
Getting started is the hardest part β lower the bar.
βWould you like to move around first, then start?β
A movement break helps many children focus.
βYou stuck with that even though it was hard. That took effort.β
Notice effort, not just results.
Try to avoid
- β’Framing it as laziness β for many children it's a brain-based challenge.
- β’One long, painful stretch β break it into small bursts.
- β’Removing all warmth β your calm is a buffer against frustration.
Why this helps
Starting and sustaining boring tasks is genuinely harder for some children, especially with ADHD. Small steps, movement, and protecting confidence work better than pressure.
